I was MD of the collection of digital businesses that Trinity Mirror had acquired in the early to mid naughties and grouped together as Trinity Mirror Digital Limited, trading as Trinity Mirror Digital Classifieds and making up the majority of TM’s digital revenue. We were an autonomous business outside of the core publishing unit with independent engineering, IT, sales, marketing, finance and operations.
Originally recruited to consolidate and manage the job board brands, including GAAPweb, TotallyLegal and SecsInTheCity, the role expanded to cover property classifieds and the Fish4 multi-market classifieds. Eventually the print classifieds from Trinity’s regional newspapers were also rolled into the digital business led by myself.
During the 2007-11 downturn, as well as launching new brands such as TotallyExec and WorkThing+, we achieved an improved net margin – supporting our now cash strapped parent – as we consolidated our 70+ brands onto a single, self built, cloud hosted classified platform and a Salesforce.com back office. This formed the platform for international expansion of our market leading brands.
